Inland Knights Interview - 10 Years of Drop Music
Ben | Apr 29, 2008
Firstly we would like congratulate you on this monumental
milestone, 10 years is a massive amount of time, especially within
this ever changing music industry, for a label to survive and prosper.
Managing to juggle this with a busy DJ schedule must be, whilst
enjoyable, very hard. Did you have designs of it getting this far or
did it just seem to happen?
It seemed to happen first with the music, then the label… which as it
became more successful needed to be carefully looked after along with
the DJ'in and Press.
There were no designs or desires for such success; the label was
started as no one wanted to release our music. I was on welfare with
nothing but our small shared studio; the internet didn't seem to exist
so there were no inroads on info or contacts. Press it and see what
happens was the plan at first. No expectations just the buzz of been
able to play our music out.
In the grander scheme of things, what exactly does Drop Music mean
to the two of you?
I usually leave that for other people to answer as they have more to
say on the subject musically, but if pressed I would say the label is
a vehicle that pushes our creativity and the sound we are known for,
fuelled by the support we were shown and our love of this music,
giving us freedom to express ourselves musically.
I can remember attending a few Smokescreen bashes many years back
and this is where I was first exposed to good quality house music. Who
influenced you early on in your careers?
Jean Michelle jarr, soft cell. Depeche mode. Acid house/warehouse
parties 89-90, Derrick carter, Todd terry. Lil Louie Vegas, whole
bunch of US house from 92-99
Do you think the world was a simpler place back then or has the
boom of the internet and other such technology helped?
I'd say having experience from back then it was much simpler than now.
Making a living from music was much easier for me and the whole
process of running a label.
I'd always say if the music was good it would serve itself back then,
not now it seems with digital downloads and the swamp of awful music
that has no A and R looking over it. Basically anything can be hosted
for sale.
This is good in some ways as anyone can seemingly have a go but the
whole thing is diluted. Then there's the piracy and illegal downloads
killing off label and artists incomes.
The internet has damaged what was once there, paving the way forward
for the future scene.
What was the driving force that pushed you into the music industry?
The label
Who and what still motivates you?
Trying to create the ideal house beat
Do you produce music with a meticulous objective or do you just
let it flow and happen?
You have to let it happen, if we were to have a meticulous objective
we'd have sounded sold out a good while back.
If you could work with any artist, who would it be and why?
If i had a time machine...Todd terry from 1991
I think every producer has a track that they can sit back, listen
to and feel most proud of. Which is yours?
There are a few tracks I feel proud off...because they still sound
good now...not gonna mention them here though'!
Do you still have as much enthusiasm and vigour as you did at the start?
Sometimes
Music is not necessarily a career that you have to retire from,
do you think it will always form a part of your lives and can you
foresee a day when you do actually stop?
It will always be a part of my life as it has been up until now, I'm
not sure what it will be in years to come, I'll be a piano tuner
maybe.
What do you listen to away from house music and do you think it's
important to have a liberal knowledge of other genres being DJ's as
well as producers?
I think it is important, but I honestly don't have as much scope as
I'd like, I'd rather write than listen. I do like radio 2 when they
get all 70-80's.
The greatest track ever and why?
Err BIG FUN inner city, just reminds me of when good music was
everywhere and the scene was amazing. It has everything.
Do either of you have any hobbies away from, 'work'?
kids kids kids, wife... kids , pro evolution soccer, cava, food, sleep
Club or field?
Field…. Any day, pref with sun and lots of PA and good drugs
What's next for 2008?
More good house music... and a number 2 hit!
The Inland Knights will be celebrating Drop's 10th Birthday with Jackinthehouse @ Club Aquarium, Old Street, London on the 2nd of May
